Matt Hayes

Platform Engineer
Washington, DC
Matt Hayes (he/him) is an artist and engineer building creative tools, immersive interactive experiences, and art games on the web. He's a Platform Engineer at Hash where he's focused on building an intuitive and performant user interface for designing ABM simulations that run in the browser (via Rust/Wasm) and are rendered in WebGL. He's spoken on particle systems as a way of modeling complex user interactions at ForwardJS 2016 and LibertyJS 2017, and on Unity's Project Tiny (web target for instant games) and ECS architecture at IGDADC in 2019.

In the fall of 2018 he was part of a gallery exhibition in New York called Neon put on by The Weekly Weekly. The work runs on an Asus Chromebit connected via HDMI to a small projector. Participants use their phones to scan a generated QR code presented in the projection, and a WebRTC connection is established to transmit the phone's device motion and orientation data to the app running on the Chromebit. Each participant then controls the orientation of a rectangle projected in screen-space inside of which a two dimensional physics simulation (powered by Box2d) lets them physically manipulate a digital object inside their phones.
